so the other day I grabbed a Dallas Child on my way out from dropping Walker off at Incanation Academy's mother's day out. I left the magazine in my car. A couple days later Shannah and I are on our way to Zoe's for lunch and as I drove us, she picks up the magazine and starts reading a very interesting article (out loud) from Dallas Child on how to handle tantrums. After learning all about tantrums, she turns a couple of pages and this is what she finds...

yep... an article about our prints of love and handprints! Love a shout out from Dallas Child. We so definitely appreciate it, along with the tips on raising an 18 month old.

Perfect Parings: It takes TWO

Is it just me, or does this girl have it going on? Some perfectly mix-matched knits not only keep her warm in this cold winter weather, but they also give her an effortlessly "threw it on" look. The only thing she is missing is some great layered necklaces.

Two that would match her style and add some flare are the large pewter tooth necklace and the rose gold dunn necklace. These are two of my favorite f. is for frank pieces and I think the pewter and rose gold look awesome together!

How would you describe your store and the things you sell?

I refer to my store a gallery/gift shop…boutique. Most of the items are handcrafted. Everything I bring in goes well with everything else in the store. It's really special because I look for unique items and especially bring in items not available elsewhere in Ann Arbor.

What is the most interesting/ greatest thing about your store?

It has a very cozy, welcoming, friendly feel the second you walk in. My customers never want to leave because we make it inviting. It takes a long leisurely look to see everything I sell…and to enjoy my merchandising. I use all reclaimed furniture and and boxes for displaying inventory. Every display area is a special "moment".

What is the best secret spot/locals only spot in your neighborhood?

My store! I'm off the beaten path, so you have to be in the know to find Heavenly Metal! My business is in a sweet little business district known as Kerrytown. There is an actual building called the Kerrytown Shops, but we are a block away from those shops. Except for one business, we are all small, locally-owned retailers. My store is around the corner from those stores, and the only retail on my street.

Why do you think f. is for frank is such a great fit for your store?

I sell alot of handcrafted jewelry and charms. I like to help people build their own necklace story by offering lots of charm varieties and prices. I love f. is for frank charms for their absolute uniqueness!

If you could open another store anywhere in the world where would it be?

In a warm tourist town on a big lake, where I could live behind my store, and have a garden for my customers to enjoy.

Is there anything else you want us or your readers to know?

I just made a huge business investment by hiring two incredibly talented local web designers to completely redo heavenlymetal.com and build into it an ecommerce site — and design a matching template for my Facebook page and email newsletters. What they came up with really and truly represents my brick and mortar store…and me…and I hope it was the smartest decision I could make. So, check it out…and let me know what you think!

The f. is for frank Gold Jefferson Ring is one of my favorite pieces in the frank collection. Before my days as the intern, I bought a Jefferson Ring in pewter and absolutely love to wear it!

In this case, with a simple black and white outfit, the gold adds just the right amount of color.

The Pewter Hickory Ear Studs are also a splash of greatness to add some detail to this outfit.

How would you describe your store and the things you sell?

We are a contemporary arts museum shop and so try to feature items that would appeal to a broad range of customers while at the same time offering unusual “never seen before” items. The same expectation could be said of what is seen in the galleries here at the Modern.

What is the most interesting/ greatest thing about your store?

We try to offer a very hands on experience. We have display toys, so that you can try them out before purchasing. Our displays are open and inviting. We encourage our visitors to try on jewelry and have mirrors ready so you can see how good you look in an item. We try to have a fun environment.

What is the best secret spot/locals only spot in your neighborhood?

Fred’s Texas Café is one of the oldest local spots in the cultural district and is a great place if you are craving a burger and live music. But the most secret neighborhood place has to be Pop’s Safari. It is a cigar bar and bistro with a tiny dining room, tucked in beside warehouses here in the Cultural District. I don’t smoke, but had a really great burger there too. Can you tell I like burgers!

Why do you think f. is for frank is such a great fit for your store?

The cleverness of the process appeals to people. When they are told what material was used for the casting, they are always amazed! The jewelry has a really good feel, substantial but not too weighty. Plus it is just gorgeous! The rose gold pieces are very unusual and look great with lots of different skin tones.

If you could open another store anywhere in the world where would it be?

I think the elements we are trying to promote would be welcome anywhere. Pairing great customer service with a fun environment and great merchandise is always going to be a formula for success. But if given a choice to go anywhere it would have to be near a beach!

Weekend SUM UP: happy MLK day

I know I have been a blog slacker since the holidays but we are back and busy so...

Happy MLK day! (actually his real birthday is my birthday Jan. 15th). Martin Luther King JR. is who I did every book report on as a kid because we have a lot in common...we both are from Atlanta, have the same birthday and believe in equality for all. YAY!

So not only was it my birthday weekend but it was my transition from the 20's to the 30's. Yes I turned the big 3-0. Saturday night I went on a dinner and movie date night to celebrate my 20's. Sunday, I had an amazing get together with my closest friends at one of my favorite resturants. It was perfect! I am so lucky to have my life and this is exactly where I wanted to be turning 30. Don't get me wrong there are still things on my bucket list... a hot air balloon ride, some mechanical bull riding and a visit to Africa but there is so much time to accomplish those.

A lot of the store is eco friendly, and made in the USA. The store is fashion forward, unique and fun. There's something for every age, body type and budget.

What is the most interesting/ greatest thing about your store?

The unique accessories are for sure my favorite thing about the store. I have jewelry from across the globe and there are many pieces that you can't find anywhere else. Also, the level of service you receive in Custard are not matched by many.

What is the best secret spot/locals only spot in your neighborhood?

My store is for sure a local place. There are way more locals that shop in Custard than tourist, however, we still love all customers. If you're a local, you know all the fun places to drink, like the Crystal Beer Parlor. A local place for sure, kind of like Cheers! Also, you know the secret to Mrs. Wilkes, the best chicken in town... I can't share it, cause it's locals only!

Why do you think f. is for frank is such a great fit for your store?

The look of the jewelry is so special and unique. Something about that fantastic rabbit just sets of the jewelry display case. Also, it's made in the USA, and we LOVE that.

We are just off of the Public Market in downtown Seattle so there are a wealth of great spots, the problem is keeping them secret! One of our very favorites is happy hour at Maxmillian's in the Market. The mussels, the wine, the frites, all at half price,and a million dollar view.

It captures the perfect balance of slightly quirky, beautiful design that people will fall in love with! That's what we did when we saw it.

This is a day in the life at f. is for frank... this post can also be seen on www.100daysofdesign.com.. a hundred days of designers from the NYIGF

A day in our life at f. is for frank is a combination of a little chaos and calm, mixed in with a lot of creativity. f. is for frank has just two employees, Shannah and I (Casey). We design and create a fabulous line of handmade, cast pewter jewelry. Shannah and I have a little help from 3 dogs named Milo, Millie and Pearl, a walking, talking toddler named Walker and a intern named Christine.

Our day starts between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Shannah gets to the studio earlier than I do and brings her boxer, Milo. I drop my toddler off at Mother's Day out and bring my dogs Millie and Pearl. The first thing we do is tend to emails and accounting business. We then go over the days schedule. Today, we had a meeting with a client at 10:30. Milo assisted.

After our meeting and lunch we did some "back room" work making jewelry. Here I am casting pewter.

Shannah is sanding the pewter castings to get them ready to be polished, soldered and antiqued.

As you can see we have been very busy. This table is full of jewelry we are in the process of making to send out to our stores all over the country.

Walker graces us with his presence in the afternoons. He loves the studio and has plenty of toys and dogs to keep him entertained. We work around him usually packing orders and completing marketing task in the front room of our studio so one of us can keep a good eye on him. Our days come to a close around 5 and among all the chaos and distraction, I always leave here feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Our Prints of Love take the finger prints of anyone over the age of 2 and incorporate them in cufflinks, necklaces, key chains and ornaments.

If you have a baby under 6 months, we can make a handprint paperweight.

On larger necklace charms we can fit two different finger prints with both names next to them. They come on either a chain or leather cord. $65

While doing some research for a new project I came across Imogen Luddy's Cross Stitch Table and I was stopped in my tracks. I am totally in love. We have done a number of projects using laser and water cutting but this is amazing. The detail blows my mind and the juxtaposition of the modern and the classic is so stunning.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Christine Jonas and I am the new f. is for frank intern! I am a senior at Southern Methodist Unviersity. Where I study journalism and studio art.

I am from California and once I graduate in May I hope to be heading further east to NYC. (To do what exactly? Who knows! But thats the exciting part!)

I am so excited to work with Casey and Shannah here at f. is for frank and learn all they have to teach me! I have been a fan of their's for a while and have a few of their pieces already. Their Pewter Jefferson Ring (which I am wearing in the photo below) is one of my favorite pieces of jewelry I own!

Aside from being an intern here, I am an associate A&E editor for SMU's The Daily Campus. I also write and publish my own fashion lifestyle blog www.givemeyourforever.com. (That's where all these pictures came from.)

I'm so excited for this opportunity and will keep you posted on how it's going!

First stop: New York City!

We showed at the New York International Gift Fair in the middle of August! It was fun being a local, riding the subway and getting to run around the city!

Next stop: Las Vegas and Austin, Texas!

Shannah ran the booth at the Las VegasPOOL TRADESHOW...

...and Casey presented f. is for frank at Austin Fashion Week!

Then there was the roadtrip to Chicago!

We started with getting lost in Oklahoma...

When we finally made it to Chicago, we set up a booth at the Renegade Craft Fair!

We'd like to bring your attention to an article in FD Luxe, featuring our friend, Rob Wilson. Our booth was right next to Rob's at the Renegade Craft Fair in Austin, and we are so glad it was, as it afforded us an opportunity to acquaint ourselves with Rob and his awesome designs. You can read the article, which points out the extremity of both Rob's height and his level of talent, in the August edition of FD Luxe. Silas Tom, Rob's paper goods company, produces cards and cocktail napkins that are truly witty, innovative, and lovely to look at.

Great Lengths

We're pleased to share with you our latest custom piece--this outsized table, recently created by f. is for frank in collaboration with Jane Waggoner. Constructed from reclaimed wood and steel, this table plays with the juxtaposition of vertical and horizontal lines, as well as, of course, scale. The long, narrow silhouette of this table makes it quite unique, creating a charming, somewhat quirky aesthetic. The table is on wheels, which add both functionality and interest to the piece. We created this table as a custom piece for a client's house, and have grown rather fond of it--we hope our client, and you, feel similarly.

Festival Season

f. is for frank is thrilled to be a part of the upcoming Wassaic Project Summer Festival, taking place August 5-7th, in Wassaic, New York. A fantastic and truly innovative organization, the Wassaic Project promotes the arts, as well as a sense of community among artists, through initiatives such as their year-round artist residency and an annual summer festival. According to their website, "The Wassaic Project is an artist-run sustainable, multidisciplinary arts organization that focuses on community engagement and facilitates artists and participants to exhibit, discuss, and connect with art, each other, our unique site, and the surrounding area." This mission statement reflects an exciting organization whose goals are truly worthwhile, and we are very happy to be collaborating with them.

The Summer Festival will feature over 100 artists and 25 bands, as well as film screenings, dance performances, and more. Amazingly, this multidisciplinary celebration of art, music, and community is free. The festival is accessible by car and Metro North Train, and if you are going to be anywhere Wassaic, New York in August, this is an opportunity you can't miss.

We are so excited to be participating in the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago's Wicker Park, September 10 and 11. The fair is free to attend and open to the public, so we would love for everyone who will be in the area to stop by! Renegade is Chicago's biggest and best indie-craft event, and will feature 300 of the best and brightest makers of handmade goods. f. is for frank wants to let the blogosphere know about a great organization promoting the arts, Oil and Cotton.

Oil and Cotton, owned by our friends Kayli House Cusick and Shannon Driscoll, combines multidisciplinary art practices with a sense of history. The organization teaches hands-on classes and provides a creative space for education, performance, and exhibition. Oil and Cotton strives to facilitate the exchange between the public and the art community.

The name of the organization is inspired by natural resources found here in Dallas, Texas. Kayli and Shannon believe that art, like oil and cotton, is a natural resource which is essential to surviving and living a full life. Thus, Oil and Cotton emphasizes resourcefulness and "making do with what you got" in order to create art in the old fashioned way--one which is realistic and sustainable.

Perfect Pairings: Add a Personal Touch to Work Attire

Finding work attire that makes a statement and expresses your individuality can be a daunting task. Luckily, f. is for frank is here to make it easier! Blazers are almost universally work-appropriate, and can be very stylish if you find the right one. We really like J. Crew's Schoolboy Blazer in Navy ($188), shown here. Today, we'd like to spotlight a great blog run by our friend, the designer Beth Dotolo. She authors the blog, hello, splendor, which showcases necessary and lovely accoutrements for modern life, not to mention some amazing photography.

She also has her own fantastic design firm, Pulp Design Studios. f. is for frank has collaborated with Pulp Design Studios in the past, for example when we created the drawer pulls for the chest of drawers in the powder room seen here.
